DOWN A CAROLINA ROAD

The quilting class was so much fun today!  Thank you to the ladies that came out and joined in on the fun!  Here are a few pictures to share.   We are planning another one in March so stay tuned for more details!  The class got a really good start on learning how to cut fabric with a rotary cutter and cutting mat.  Then they sewed their strips together, then we cut the pattern, then we began to sew the rows together to make the rail pattern.  Next class when they return with their finished laptop we will begin to make the "quilt sandwich".

If you would like to join us you can still join in on this process as I will help you get started on this pattern and help them learn how to put their quilt together.  Come join us!

All proceeds from these classes go to designated mission funds at Red Oak Christian Church - so you get to learn something new, have fun and help a good cause.  We would love to have you!

From left to right:  Shannon, Lisa A, Karen, Amber, Lisa J, Dianne, Aubrey, and Stephanie.  My assistant Suzanne was taking the photo.

Karen and her daughter in law Amber are cutting their fabric on the cutting mat. Dianne is on her way to get her fabric cut too.

Shannon was the one that had never sewed before but was rocking that sewing machine and did very well!
Shannon cutting some more fabric and Dianne is sewing some of her granddaughter's strips together for
 her quilt.

This is how Aubrey's quilt was beginning to shape up - awesome fabrics - fun and cool!

Stephanie did great with picking fabrics - this is going to be beautiful!
Stephanie has the pattern figured out!  In the background you can see this pattern (over her shoulder) on a finished laptop - this is what their finished product will look like when they complete the rest at home.

DOWN A CAROLINA ROAD

For those of you that like to see the posts on the wonderful places in North Carolina . . . be patient, I will get back to that next week, but right now we are going to have a southern girls quilting class with a new modern twist!  Come join us!

For all the ones that are planning to attend our FAST, FUN and MODERN quilting class on February 23 - take a look at the pic below . . . . here is what you might want to consider bringing with you.
(email me a lisacarol99@gmail.com to register for the class to be held at Red Oak Christian Church in Greenville N.C. and all proceeds go to designated mission trip funds).

1)  A cutting mat is essential to cutting fabric correctly and even.  You will use this mat with the ruler guide you see in the picture and a rotary cutter.  IF YOU DO NOT have these you can purchase this in a kit at any fabric store.  Look up Joann Fabrics and Hancock Fabrics for coupons that are normally 40% off.  IF YOU DO NOT purchase these items - no worries because I am bringing mine and we can share.

2)  A seam ripper is always a nice gadget to have on hand - if you are like me sooner or later you will make a mistake and need to rip it apart and start over.  UGH!  It happens.

3)  YOU WILL NEED TO bring your own thread and your sewing machine.  If you do not have a sewing machine - I have two we can work with on a share basis.  Your thread should be 100% cotton in the color natural and be sure to purchase thread that specifically states for sewing machine quilting - ask the help at the fabric store to point you in the right directions.

4)  OF COURSE you must bring your fabric - - at least three different fabrics for your quilt top and at least a yard or yard and one half.  Remember this is a sampler lap quilt size so we do not need alot of fabric to make it happen.  If you need more you can always go back and purchase more to make your quilt bigger.  Bringing some quilting pins is helpful too - but I have plenty of those as well.

5)  Most of all come ready to have some fun.  This is fast and fun quilting and anyone can do it.  This is not the "quilting bee" sitting around hand stitching event.  Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with that either ;-)  it's just not my style and WHO has time anymore for that . . . I want a quilt ready to go to someone special in a flash!  Trust me - you will love this and you will love making quilts, placemats, handbags, messenger bags, all sorts of items with learning this simple procedure.

You do not need the extra large spool of thread you see in the top right hand corner . . . just bring regular spools of thread.  Unless you have an industrial or super fancy machine you cannot use those large spools anyway.

Cannot wait to see you on Saturday and have some fun!  I am preparing a big pot of  homemade soup for you and sandwiches.  Bring any other snack with you if you like.  See you Saturday!

DOWN A CAROLINA ROAD

It's a Carolina Blue sky and ocean quilt with khaki sand!

For those of you interested in the quilting class . . . here is an example of how you put your quilt sandwich together - the quilt top, the inner cotton batting and the quilt back.

Here is how the three layers put together look - I chose to do a wave stitch.  It has created the fluffiest textured quilt.  It is also very easy to do with a free motion quilting attachment.  Your machine may have one - if not it is possible that there is a quilting foot free motion attachment that you can purchase to go on your machine.  Just be sure that if you use a free motion quilting attachment that you turn your feed dogs OFF!  The first one I did I forgot to do that and I learned from my mistake - so now you can learn from mine.

Above you see the three layers together.  They have been measured and pinning together being sure they are flat and wrinkle free.  Then to help it stay together as I sew the three layers I use small laundry clothespins.  You can see how I rolled it up so that it is easy to get the bulk of the quilt  through the sewing machine.  This quilt is almost done so there is not that large of a roll on the end.  When I first begin to sew these layers I roll up both ends and begin quilting the layers in the center of the quilt.  This helps to push out the fabric from center to the edge and keeps wrinkling to a minimum.    As you can see in this picture - reading glasses help alot!  I keep them beside my machine - can't work without them.
This picture above  is how you place it in the machine.  You can see that you can hold a large roll in the throat of your machine if you roll it tightly.  One day . . . one day I can only hope to get a long arm sewing machine to make this alot easier.  A girl can dream right?

This is my sewing partner . . . our black lab Dallas.  He sits beside me when I sew . . . so sweet.  I think he likes the hum of the machine.

More pics to come on the next blog.  I am so close to having this one completed.  If you are interested in the quilting classes please email me at lisacarol99@gmail.com.  Remember that the cost of the class goes toward designated mission projects. It's only $30.00 and includes your lunch!  The class will be held at ...
